The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a directive to all Access Providers and International Long Distance Operators to curb unsolicited commercial SMSs originating from outside the country. The authority found that such messages were bypassing the National Customer Preference Register by being routed through international servers. Operators are now required to block specific types of international SMS, including those with alphabet/alphanumeric headers and those using the +91 country code. Additionally, limits have been placed on the volume of SMS from a single source, and only authorized global titles are permitted. Compliance with these measures is mandated within thirty days of the direction's issuance.
